Scientists grow human serotonin neurons in petri dish

For the first time ever, University of Buffalo researchers have created human serotonin: the precious neurotransmitter linked to depression. 
 

Until now, the inability to obtain live human serotonin to study neurological illnesses has limited serotonin research to lab animals.

According to researchers, these findings may be applied to other previously inaccessible human cell types. 

"Our work demonstrates that the precious serotonin neurons hidden deep inside the human brain can now be created in a petri dish," said lead author Jian Feng, PhD, professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics in the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Google is now Alphabet

It's not often that a company with a market cap of over $400 billion announces a massive operational restructuring plan that will undoubtedly hog the public conversation in tech social circles for months to come. Yet, that's exactly what Google did today.

Under terms of the restructuring plan announced today by Larry Page, Google is rebranding itself as a new company called Alphabet. The core Google products you've come to know and love — YouTube, Android, Google Search, Gmail, Chrome, and Maps — aren't getting the new branding but they will operate as a single unit under the Alphabet umbrella. The move, according to Page, is intended to provide more transparency to the company's quarterly operations while also allowing Alphabet to better focus on other large entities such as Nest, Calico, Google X Incubator, and more.
 
"Our company is operating well today, but we think we can make it cleaner and more accountable," Page wrote, adding that he'll stay on as CEO of Alphabet while fellow cofounder Sergey Brin assumes the role of president. "Fundamentally, we believe this allows us more management scale, as we can run things independently that aren't very related."

The US FDA Approves the World's First 3D Printed Pill

The US Food and Drug Administration has authorized the production of a 3D-printed pill created by Aprecia Pharmaceuticals.

The new pill called Spritam was developed to control seizures brought on by epilepsy. The use of 3D-printing allows the layers of medication to be packaged more tightly in precise dosages. 

The FDA has previously approved other medical devices to be 3D printed including prosthetics. Aprecia Pharmaceuticals has plans to develop other medications using its 3D platform. 

Aprecia Pharmaceuticals also developed a technology called ZipDose that makes it easier to swallow high dosages. Printing the drug allows a single table to hold up to 1,000 milligrams and dissolve similarly to other oral medicines.

NASA 3D Prints Space Drone to Explore Mars


NASA Blog Editor Steven Siceloff announced that Swamp Works engineers at NASA's Kennedy Space Center are inventing an extreme access flyer tasked with gathering samples from other planets. These drones will be able to access areas on other worlds that are currently inaccessible to rovers. 

Siceloff explains, "The vehicles – similar to quad-copters but designed for the thin atmosphere of Mars and the airless voids of asteroids and the moon – would use a lander as a base to replenish batteries and propellants between flights."
 
According to Swamp Works Senior Technologist Rob Mueller, "This is a prospecting robot..The first step in being able to use resources on Mars or an asteroid is to find out where the resources are. They are most likely in hard-to-access areas where there is permanent shadow. Some of the crater walls are angled 30 degrees or more, and that's far too steep for a traditional rover to navigate and climb."

The Argus Leader devotes a week to debating the evolution of automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, and its impact on the workforce. 

 
This week Steve Young of The Argus Leader is taking an in-depth look at robotics as it applies to the human workforce.  

Young explains, "But just as the evolution of electricity helped to propel the nation through the Second Industrial Revolutio
n more than a century ago, the technological wizardry that has brought Siri to our cell phones and 'recalculating to our highway lexicon promises to be just as transformative."

Based in Souix Falls, The Argus Leader will focus on technology's impact on their largest industries: manufacturing, health care, financial services, and retail services. Young asks, "Could robots do the welding, the assembly line work and the other lower-level repetitive jobs that companies seem to have such a difficult time filling?"

"Some people, like Silicon Valley software developer Martin Ford, are telling me that advances in robotics and artificial intelligence will eventually make a large fraction of our human workforce obsolete."

Interview with Stephen Wolfram on AI and the Future

Stephen Wolfram is a distinguished scientist, technologist and entrepreneur. He has devoted his career to the development and application of computational thinking. 
 

Byron Reese: So when do you first remember hearing the term "artificial intelligence"?
 
Stephen Wolfram: That is a good question. I don't have any idea. When I was a kid, in the 1960s in England, I think there was a prevailing assumption that it wouldn't be long before there were automatic brains of some kind, and I certainly had books about the future at that time, and I'm sure that they contained things about them, how there would be some electronic brains, and so on. Whether they used the term "artificial intelligence," I'm not quite sure. Good question. I don't know.
 
Would you agree that AI, up there with space travel, has kind of always been the thing of tomorrow and hasn't advanced at the rate we thought they would?
 
Oh, yes. But there's a very definite history. People assumed, when computers were first coming around, that pretty soon, we'd automate what brains do just like we've automated what arms and legs do, and so on. Nobody had any real intuition for how hard that might be. It turned out, for reasons that people simply didn't understand in the '40s, and '50s, and '60s, that lots of aspects of it were quite hard, and also, the specific problem of reproducing what human brains choose to do may not be the right problem. Just like if you want to build a transportation system, having it based on legs is not the best engineering solution. There was an assumption that we can automate brains just like you can automate mechanical kinds of things, and it's only a matter of time, and in the early '60s, it seemed like it would be a short time, but that turned out not to be true, at least for some things.

ORACLE TO 'SINNER' CUSTOMERS: REVERSE ENGINEERING IS A SIN AND WE KNOW BEST
A blog post this week by Oracle CSO Mary Ann Davidson went viral, but not in the way she probably was hoping. Charlie Osbourne at ZDNet dissects the now-deleted post, which attempted to argue that Oracle's EULA prevents customers from looking for security vulnerabilities among other statements that bemused and angered the security community.

CISCO'S FIRST EARNINGS REPORT WITH NEW CEO GOES SMOOTHLY 

New Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins crossed off the first instance of a dreary-yet-important ritual -- the quarterly earnings conference call -- with aplomb this week, although he and Wall Street are still in the honeymoon phase. Jonathan Vanian at Fortune notes that while Cisco revenue and profits grew quite modestly, at least they grew: IBM and EMC would have settled for modest growth.

In what was easily the biggest news of the past week, Google reinvented itself as the modern-day tech conglomerate, announcing plans to create a new holding company called Alphabet that will sit above the search giant. By now you've digested all the takes and struggled to picture Larry Page as the new Warren Buffet, but amid all the hubbub we don't have a lot of insight into what this move means for Google's cloud computing strategy.

It appears that Urs' organization will (for now) remain underneath Google Inc., now headed by the very capable Sundar Pichai (Structure veteran. Just sayin'.) But the question becomes one of focus: will anything change under a new leader? Will Google's cloud team still have the support and flexibility of the broader organization to go after this important future market?

Although Google, I mean, Alphabet (this is going to take a little while) has likely been planning this move for a long time, the cloud group probably wasn't on the list of initial priorities. And that makes sense: even though Google Cloud is facing a tough market competing against Amazon Web Services and Microsoft, it's growing, and shaking things up right now doesn't really make much sense.

At some point, however, Google's infrastructure group seems like exactly the type of business that could emerge under Alphabet as a separate company.  If Amazon one day spins off Amazon Web Services and Microsoft continues to invest in Azure as one of its crown jewels, a separate, focused Google Cloud group removed from Google Inc. might provide the best environment for it to grow and attack all kinds of as-a-service business models. And it would have quite a sales pitch to public cloud doubters: "Hey, Google runs 100 percent on us!"

This is not going to happen for a while: Google and its infrastructure are extremely intertwined, and Google probably doesn't want to break out its cloud revenue and profits as part of Alphabet, preferring to hide them within the overall Google pie as the group gets going. But such a company -- with amazing infrastructure at its disposal and a cash machine to fund investment -- could be a formidable cloud services competitor in the coming years.

As we get closer and closer to Structure 2015, this week we'll talk about the continuing (but slow) evolution of IBM, the potential for EMC's complicated corporate structure to become simpler, and whether public cloud providers should practice what they preach.

EMC CONSIDERS A BUYOUT BY ITS OWN SUBSIDIARY VMWARE
EMC and VMware have been rivals and partners and colleagues in a confusing corporate structure, but that might be about to get a lot simpler. Recode reported this week that EMC is considering orchestrating a "downstream merger" in which VMware (80 perent of which is owned by EMC) would acquire EMC. Actually, that sounds confusing.

AS ITS LEGACY SOFTWARE STALLS, IBM CLOUD SERVICE REVS ENGINE
It's an all too familiar challenge IBM has faced over the decades: finding a way to adjust to a new wave of computing before that new wave eats its existing businesses. Ed Scannell over at TechTarget takes a look at how IBM is doing in its quest to stay relevant amid the cloud revolution.

IS THERE ANY STOPPING THE AWS JUGGERNAUT?
It will probably be a long time (if ever) before IBM is overtaken by AWS, but the financial performance of AWS over the last year is definitely impressive. Has that growth left AWS open to disruption itself, from other cloud players? Ben Kepes makes the case that the folks running AWS have a plan for a more competitive future.

FLASH DISRUPTION COMES TO SERVER MAIN MEMORY
Flash memory is everywhere these days in the consumer market, but it's been a little slower to infiltrate the main memory slots of the server world because of concerns about speed. Timothy Prickett Morgan at The Platform reviews a new product from Diablo that could change that equation for workloads that depend on memory capacity more than speed.
BIG PICTURE
"Public Cloud Über Alles!" has been the mantra for much of the cloud computing industry for a very long time, crowding out those who would prefer to sell private clouds their customers can personally control or at least some sort of hybrid mix. But as public cloud vendors grow beyond their initial success with greenfield startups opting for 100 percent public cloud and start calling on bigger, more established companies, that might have to change.
 
Fortune and the Wall Street Journal both highlighted this evolution in separate pieces this week. Fortune noted that Google, which trails Amazon by quite a bit in the cloud market, is touting its friendliness with private or hybrid clouds as a selling point that Amazon can't yet match. And The Journal noted that even though Amazon runs "the vast majority" of its massive online store on Amazon Web Services, there are still a few things the retailer would prefer to keep on private servers.
 
This evolution of the cloud market might be overstated by those who are trying to dent Amazon's still-growing cloud business, because, face it: they've got to try something. The whole cloud concept is still pretty new to a lot of CIOs outside of Silicon Valley who worry about breaking a system that doesn't necessarily need fixing, and some degree of comfort that they can control their own destiny (as well as ensure a little job security) is welcome.
 
One way to overcome those objections is to employ that delightful old tech industry phrase and "eat one's own dog food" by showing potential cloud customers that if Amazon is willing to entrust its entire operation to AWS, then what are you waiting for? However, it seems more and more likely that there is going to be a bigger market than some might have expected for companies that just want to dabble in the cloud. That could give hope to some legacy players and should continue the product-development evolution of the public cloud toward features that accommodate existing infrastructure, not just price cuts.
